On November 16th, the world's largest onshore wind turbine, the 15 MW SI-270150, independently developed by SANY Renewable Energy, successfully achieved operation at rated power.
This groundbreaking accomplishment once again sets a new global record for onshore wind turbine operation, establishing a new benchmark for the development of large onshore wind turbines in the world.
The SI-270150 is a flagship product developed by SANY Renewable Energy on its 12.X–16.X MW onshore and offshore platform. Designed with a lifespan of 25–30 years, it features a rotor diameter of 270 meters and is adaptable to a wide range of medium- to high-wind-speed scenarios. Based on an average annual wind speed of 9 meters per second, SANY Renewable Energy's 15 MW onshore turbine can generate up to 56 million kWh of electricity per year.
As the first wind turbine manufacturer to unveil a 15 MW onshore turbine, SANY Renewable Energy has prioritized long-term reliability over rapid deployment. By implementing a comprehensive validation system that covers materials, components, subsystems, entire units, and batch production, the company has embedded robust reliability into the product's DNA. SANY has adopted a dual-prototype testing model, combining indoor test benches with trial wind farms for synchronized performance and durability testing of the entire turbine.
Following the successful grid connection and rated power operation of the 15 MW turbine, it will now undergo over a year of operational testing at the trial wind farm. This process will include nearly 2,000 performance tests to thoroughly verify the reliability of its components and overall design under real-world conditions.
Meanwhile, in Beijing, thousands of kilometers away, a prototype of the same model will undergo testing on SANY Renewable Energy's 35 MW Six Degrees of Freedom & Drivetrain Back-to-Back Test Bench, the largest of its kind globally. Over 18 months of accelerated lifespan aging tests, the turbine and its components will undergo extreme validation equivalent to 30 years of wind farm operation, pushing the boundaries of technology and physical limits.
As a trailblazer in the development of large-megawatt onshore wind turbines, SANY Renewable Energy has achieved steady milestones along its innovation journey.
From launching the world’s first 8.5–11 MW onshore platform turbine in February 2023, to rolling out the 131-meter ultra-long onshore wind turbine blade in January this year, and now successfully achieving operation at rated power of the 15 MW onshore wind turbine, SANY has repeatedly rewritten the history of onshore wind power in China. Through continuous technological innovation, the company remains dedicated to advancing the development of large wind turbines and enabling the high-quality development of global wind resources.
