On 21 January, SANY RE's 131-metre onshore wind turbine blade successfully rolled off the production line in Bayannur Intelligent Industrial Park, breaking the record of the world's longest onshore wind turbine blade.

Technical Innovation

As the length of blade increases, the requirements for stiffness and strength are also higher, otherwise issues such as stall and classical flutter might occur, resulting in increased vibration, even breaking of the blade. To address such challenges, by adopting an optimized airfoil design featuring large thickness and blunt trailing edge, the overall absolute thickness of SANY RE’s SY1310A wind turbine blade is significantly improved.

At the same time, SANY RE introduces a number of new technologies in the manufacturing process of the blade, including self-designed fiberglass pre-quilting technology, long-distance automatic infusion technology for large and composite blade, and three-dimensional design technology for trailing edge blind bonding insert, etc., transforming the traditional manual manufacturing to intelligent manufacturing and enhancing the lean production with digital intelligence. In addition, recyclable polyurethane structural parts are also adopted to enhance the recyclability of ultra-long blades.

Reliable Product

In the application of large wind turbines and long blades, reliability is the issue that customers are most concerned with. By upgrading the traditional pultruded spar cap from glass fiber to carbon fiber, together with the adoption of reinforcement + shear web in trailing edge and optimized design of single/double webs in spar cap, SANY RE successfully improves the stiffness and stability, as well as effectively reduces the weight of its ultra-long blades.

In addition, SANY RE has designed a customized lightning protection scheme with metal mesh for its carbon fiber spar cap to ensure the reliability of the blade in lightning. The blade will also undergo component level and full-scale tests to comprehensively guarantee the reliability, such as three-point bending test, trailing edge flexural test, fatigue test, 4+X multi-axis linear test, etc.

Ushering in the Era of Larger WTG

SY1310A blades will be applied in SANY RE's 15MW wind turbine, which was unveiled at the 2023 Beijing International Wind Energy Conference and Exhibition and became the world's largest onshore wind turbine at that time.

The 15MW WTG adopts an integrated drive train system, with the gearbox directly connected to the bearing housing, which simplifies the structure, reduces potential failure and allows for a shared lubrication and cooling system. With the adoption of double TRB main bearing design and 4-point suspension, the reliability of the wind turbine is significantly enhanced. As the blades and generators are designed independently by SANY RE, high synergy with the overall design of WTG and better performance can be guaranteed.

In recent years, SANY RE has continuously launched innovative products with large megawatts and long blades that are ahead of the industry, making breakthroughs in technology and reliability. In the future, SANY RE will always uphold the concept of "Reliability First", provide reliable products and services to customers, and contribute to the sound development of wind power industry.
